SUNSHINE Tours director Danny Zwiebel says he is impressed with the upgrading of infrastructure at Nkana Golf Club.
The club, which has undergone major upgrades, is hosting the 2014 Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open Golf Championship that teed off yesterday.

Speaking at a cocktail party at Kitwe’s Nkana Golf Club on Monday evening, Zwib urged management to put in place security measures to safeguard infrastructure from vandalism so that the club could host future events.

He also commended the Zambia Open Organising Committee (ZOOC) and corporate entities that partnered with title sponsors Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) for the successful preparations for this year’s event.

“We are impressed with the great job that has been done at Nkana Golf Club. The golf course and the club house are up to the standards of Sunshine Tour events. We would like to commend Mopani, the organising committee and all the sponsors for their good work,” Zwib said.
ZOOC chairperson  Emmanuel Mutati said his committee was indebted to the Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) for the confidence it had shown in Nkana Golf Club by granting it the right to host the 2014 Zambia Open Golf Championship.

Mutati said the ZOOC was also grateful to all corporate entities for making it possible for his committee to raise the budgeted US$1 million (about K6.3 million).

“Mopani through chief executive officer Danny Callow played an important role in the successful hosting of this year’s event. We are proud that the US$250,000 prize that has been put in this tournament is the biggest prize money in the history of the Zambia Open,” Mutati said.
He said the rehabilitation of the club will foster development of golf.

Callow, who is also the tournament’s chief executive officer, paid tribute to immediate past Kitwe mayor Chileshe Bweupe for his personal efforts in bringing the event to Kitwe.

“Detractors thought we were not going to manage to host this event in Kitwe. We now have the best course at Nkana Golf Club. I must commend former mayor Chileshe Bweupe for his personal efforts. He made a go for Zambia Open,” Callow said.

He said MCM was proud to be title sponsors. He commended all sponsors for their material and financial support towards the tournament.
