CHOMA Golf Club on Sunday stunned their opponents when they scooped this year’s quadrangular championship held at their golf course.

Choma, who started as underdogs behind defending champions, Chilanga and Nkana, used home advantage to garner 90 points to win the tournament, which was sponsored by Meanwood General Insurance.

Chilanga, who carry a record of winning the tournament for two consecutive years, could not replicate their performance as they only managed second position with 63 points. In third position was Nkana, who picked up 38 points and Nchanga was at the tail end with only 25 points.

Zambia Golf Union general secretary, Kelly Munsaka, was delighted with the performance of the junior players at the tournament.

He encouraged all the clubs to invest in young players, saying it would provide a good foundation for the sport.

“In this tournament, the junior players played very well and I was impressed. There is a lot of improvement among the junior players. It was not easy to beat Chilanga; they fielded a lot of young players,” Munsaka said.

Meanwhile, Munsaka revealed that the next order of merit the union had lined up was the Nkana Open, which would serve as the Windhoek Africa Jacket qualifier.

He said the Nkana Open would also be used as a qualifier for the two Zambia Opens later this year, which are the Mopani and Zambia Sugar Opens at Nkana and Lusaka golf clubs respectively.
