ENGLISHMAN Ross McGowan was yesterday crowned the 2015 Mopani/RedPath Zambia Open champion at Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe.
McGowan finished at five-under 67 during Sunday’s final round to finish with an overall total of 13-under. He finished two shots ahead of South African Danie van Tonder. The 33-year-old Englishman said he exceeded his own expectations coming into the final round of the Zambia Open.
“It is really nice, I played fantastic on the front nine today. I set myself to finish 12-under today. I will play in Lusaka next week, so I am going there tomorrow to feel the course. It is a nice first visit to Zambia,” McGowan said. McGowan had an almost flawless round with just one bogey on the par-four 5th hole and rolled in six birdies, three alone on his final three holes to cap his first Sunshine Tour win.
Meanwhile, Madalitso Muthiya was the best of the two Zambian duo when he finished his final round at four-under to complete the Zambia Open at par. Muthiya played his best round at this year’s tournament after carding five birdies while his bogey on the par-four 5th hole was his only blemish on Sunday.
“I played as well as I did yesterday but I just made a few putts but from tee to green, it was pretty good,” Muthiya said. “So as I prepare for the one that’s coming up, obviously finishing off with a 68 or four-under par can only help trickle into the next tournament.”
Muthiya’s compatriot Aaron Simfukwe who had enjoyed consistent form from day-one and came into the final round at one-over, finished the tournament at nine-over.
