On Friday 4th of April, Zambia Sugar Plc held a media briefing at the Lusaka Golf Club to announce its title sponsorship of the Zambia Sugar Open golf tournament for the next three years. The sponsorship is worth a whopping US$450,000.
The company’s sponsorship makes it the largest single sponsor of a golf tournament in the history of Zambia. The Zambia Sugar Open is the newest entrant to the Sunshine Tour, a professional men’s golf tournament based in Southern Africa. The Sunshine Tour will now, for the first time, have two tournaments in Zambia, the other tournament being the Mopani Zambia Open. The Zambia Sugar Open tournament will bring together a rich crop of professional golfers from Zambia and around the world.
History of Zambia Sugar’a association with golf
Zambia Sugar’s association with the Zambia Open has a long and enduring history. The company has been one of the partial sponsors of the tournament over the years and was the title sponsor at last year’s championship.
With a sponsorship sum of US$150,000 per annum, Zambia Sugar has been granted the title rights that will see the tournament being known as the ‘Zambia Sugar Open’ for the years 2014 to 2016.
Speaking during the briefing, Zambia Sugar Managing Director, Dr. Aubrey Chibumba said: “Our vision of sustainable concepts comes together in the fields of sport and business.` We are very proud to continue to be the title sponsors of one of the most respected Zambian sports events, and are convinced that the Zambia Sugar Open powered by Zambia Sugar Plc will contribute positively to the development of the game of golf in Zambia.”
